Framer in the news

Post by Jonathan »

I saw this rather odd news story on the BBC News today:

Is the Phantom Framer creating art by beautifying street signs in south-west London with picture frames?

That's not cheap moulding he's using. :P

Heard of guerilla gardening where people sneak out at night and plant trees, but never guerilla framing. :ninja: :ninja: :ninja:

I like them :D

But why the need for anonymity?

Why not let people know who/where he is and get more customers ?

It does sound like a publicity stunt -- perhaps there is more to follow...

I'm guessing the anonymity is because the powers that be see it as criminal damage and would love to give somebody a fine or jail.

Council are quite happy to give licences for ugly repetitive hoardings, presumably they receive a fee? The frames will naturally deteriorate and when they become unsightly then is the time to remove them.

Up here in Scotland the Duke of Wellingtons Stature in Glasgow is a prime example of Councils ethos.

Perhaps all the members of FF should dig out that length of moulding that has been at the back of the store for years, probably destined for the council tip and FRAME A SIGN !

I framed a sign and referenced the phantom framer. This one sits outside my workshop and has led to a fair bit of positive PR.

I agree that we should all do it with old moulding lying around. This moulding isn't particularly exciting but it still looks good on a sign.
It's been up for a month now and still looking good.

An update

I have a friend living in Teddington/Richmond area who noticed the framed signs. He has today told me >>>
===================================
Clearly, it generated a lot of interest within the framing community, and within the Teddington population. Richmond council however removed most frames (as I guess they don't want people to take the framed signs), and I believe the Phantom framers were actually from the framing shop on the high street. Hardly a surprise. Has he identified the correct framer ?
