I could've sworn my last post had a quote in it. Must have outgassed!

Quoting the previous post is very rarely necessary.

Quoting the previous post in full is just plain ridiculous.

When I verbally reply to someone, I don't repeat every last thing that they said to me before I get on with my point, I think they might find it annoying. Wouldn't you?

Yes, but written is not the same - anyway, they were only very short quotes (which I had amended slightly as well) I'd never fully quote a big post, I also thought my post may appear on the next page too, in which case it would have saved scrolling back, but it didn't and it's no big deal anyway.

Agreed, there are many differences between the spoken word and the dialog that takes place on a forum, however repeating the words of others who have recently contributed, by either means of communication, is equally pointless.

Surely you don’t really expect folk to re-read word for word what they have just recently read. A few of words of quotation might occasionally give context to the point you are making, but apart from that, (short quotes or not) why clutter the thread unnecessarily?

And as for modifying the quoted text - that is just too ludicrous. A bit like saying in a conversation “yes, I know I’ve just repeated what he just said, but didn’t you notice that I shouted some of the words?” or “One of the sentences was spoken in the style of the shipping forecast” so that’s ok.

Maybe it’s just me, but I find superfluous quotations within a thread extremely off-putting.

Got to say for the most part I have always found “quotes” in long posts or threads with many posters very useful and helpful.

Is this the 5 minute argument, or the full half hour!

What I did was add a few words to one quote of mine, to point out that I'd made that post almost a year ago - OK, I could have just kept the first few words and then a dotted line, but as I said, it wasn't a long post.

Then I changed the colour of one line in someone else's post so I could refer to it - and OK - again I could have deleted the rest.

Anyway - my post, minus my quotes, still makes sense but just loses the points I wanted to make/emphasise

An almost perfect demonstration of the correct use of quotes, Roboframer. :)
