Linen slips

Postby Mary » Thu Sep 20, 2012 8:22 pm

I hope this isn't a daft question but... Bearing in mind they'd be in direct contact with the artwork if there's no window mount, I was wondering how safe linen covered slips are to use from a conservation point of view? or any slips/ fillets for that matter

If it's a paper surface it is in contact with, you can always line the rebate with some sort of tape.
Or even get some thin ragboard and fold it in an 'L' shape and tack it to the rebate with a few dabs of PVA glue. Some mouldings have a nasty ridge under the rebate lip so this will provide a 'cushion' as well as isolating possible nasties.

If there's no mountboard/glass/package being used, I always line the rebate/slip/fillet with gummed paper/cotton tape :)

Hi Mary

For isolating rebates, slips, fillets etc. from direct contact with the art, I would use Lineco aluminium barrier tape.
