Mad world indeed! It's not the first time I've had to say we are framers, not magicians! End of the day, you can only do your best with what you are given to work with.

No it's not, the average artist knows diddly about conservation and nor does the average excellent artist, conservation framing has nothing to do with what the artwork was painted on or in.

That's out of our control.

It's about what we do or don't do to it and what materials we use or don't use.

That is within our control.

My point exactly. :D

Is it a mad world?
No it isn't a mad world, the framer is doing what has been asked and if s/he was a good framer, wouldn't have to be asked. These days preservation framing is not rocket surgery and, until it gets to glass, not necessarily expensive either, in either materials or labour. Pretty much every reversible method I use is easier, quicker and cheaper than, for example, dry mounting. Even when it gets to glass, AR glass, which is just done for effect on anything, cheap or not, costs more than UV glass.

Isn't one of the reasons to use conservation methods to perserve items that otherwise would not last very long?
As John pointed out many of the conservation methods are easier to do than other more invasive methods, we platform mount most photos rather than dry mounting for instance.
