Underpinner wedges leaning backwards

Post by ChrisG »

Using a 15mm wedge on a narrow but tall moulding it came though the side of the moulding on underpinning, 10mm wedge no problem.

I've noticed in the past on breaking open a join that particularly staked wedges tend to lean backwards a little. Is this something to do with the set up of the underpinner (Cassese 199MXL with Cassese wedges)?

What wood is the moulding?
This happens sometimes on pine when the rays are quite coarse and are running in a curved pattern.

They are not leaning back, well, effectively they are but they are actually widening, opening out.

Leaning back is a good thing it gives strength to the joint I believe.

I would say that this is that often happens and needs to be taken into account when deciding where to place your wedges. The exent to which the tradectory of the wedges curves outward depends upon the grain and type of wood that you are using. I would not call this a problem with your equipment.

I find hardwood wedges stay closer to 90 degrees if its an issue for you.

Softwood wedges tend to slope back (I too heard that this is good)
