Glass cutter & Smoothing edges

Post by Ed209 »

Hello I am new to framing and will be using Framers forum a lot to research and ask questions, My question today is I watched a youtube video of someone cutting glass and after he cut it he smoothed the edges with a block presumably with some kind of abrasive or diamond etc. What if any make / type do you use for this?

My second question is regarding a link someone put on the forum that I cant find at the moment that was a rail guided glass cutter that i believe will fit on to our Keencut Ultimat futura, Has anyone more info on these please

I've never smoothed any glass edges. And I've cut a lot of glass. :D

It's only really necessary if you are making clipframes where the edges are exposed.
Who makes clipframes???

If you simply must smooth your glass one of these is the weapon - https://www.lionpic.co.uk/p/7717/Telum- ... 0mm-x-55mm

As for cutters, is this the sort of thing?....

Never heard of a straight mount cutter with a glass cutting attachment.

Thank you the smooth edges is so my wife can handle the glass for framing up she has a thing about cutting herself along with a fear of swallowing a fish bone.

The glass cutter is not the one I saw but will look into this one, I am currently using a new Silver line one that that the person we bought all the equipment off supplied as he wanted to keep his glass cutter for sentimental reasons, and now I realise you put oil in it seems Ok, again wife not comfortable freehand and rule cutting, maybe I just need a new wife :D

I've never smoothed the edges of glass that I've cut.
I wear gloves so I'm not worried abut cuts.

You're not a picture framer unless you have plasters on most your fingers  :giggle:

I'm always surprised how often I get asked to make clipframes. Not talking huge amounts, but way more than I would have expected!
Thanks,

I've been asked more than once to fit new glass to clipframes.

It would cost me more than buying a new one.

I've got one of these - I've only used it occasionally but it's done the job. Probably not suitable for a lot of use though.

Brilliant piece of kit. You will have to keep your mountcutter clean though; I had a second one - an incomplete Keencut laser(? something elderly anyway) - that I bought on eBay for £30 that I used. Reminds me, must get rid of it.

I would be interested in buying if you wish to sell, I have decided to keep the glass and cutting to the garage for safety and space reasons as we are currently starting up in a spare room in our house

You have a PM. If you send one to me it will say it is still in your Outbox until I have read it - forum peculiarity.
