Tray Frame technique

Post by cebrooker »

Hello all,

I'm in a bit of a panic. I have been asked to frame a pre-stretched canvas which is 36mm deep and the stretcher is 25mm wide. I need to know what to order ASAP so I can get the order in for delivery and haven't got a clue what I need or what to do when I have what I need. Please could someone give me some pointers as I am also struggling to find any guides as my technical terms might not be right!

Thanks,

Charles

Get in contact with forum member GeoSpectrum, he makes tray frames and sells them on line, he might be able to help you

Thanks very much, after hours of digging it would appear that you just make up the frame and then screw the canvas to it! Seems a bit disappointing lacking in technicality...

Not quite that simple... :P

If you want to frame it 'snug', with no space between frame and canvas edge, you have to have
canvas that is dead square.

You can adjust the height that the canvas sits in the frame with a bit of packing.

You don't need to go too mad with the screws in the back. One in the middle of each side is
adequate to small sizes. The less the better.

There ya go. You know as much as I do now.

Whats the best way to know what external length to cut?

Is it :
external length = (the width of the vertical lip plus the amount of gap you want between the inside of lip and the canvas/board artwork x 2) + length of artwork ?????
eg for lip of 12mm, gap of 5mm, artwork length 200mm - external length = (12 +5 x 2) +200 = 234

I to have never found any tech info to help on this matter so want to know if this is correct or if there are better methods to calculate it with.

What do you all think?

Lip?

With an inlay frame using an ordinary L profile add 2x the shadow gap to each length. So for a 800mm canvas with a 10mm shadow gap cut the length to 820mm. If there is a step inside the L profile, measure from the inside of the step.

If you are cutting on a Morso, then there is no difference to cutting any moulding, if the canvas is 500mm wide and you want a gap of 5mm then you set the stop on 510mm , basically it's like cutting moulding upside down, you don't need to what the out side measurement is, that is if you are using a Morso
