Jumbo board

Post by jon buck »

Needing to locate a Jumbo board similar colour to Arqadia Putty code 8009. not clever enough to splice two together.

Any suggestion would be well received.

Thanks

What do you mean by a "jumbo board"?

Anything over 40 x 60 will be either white or white.

Jerome - in UK Jumbo means 40 x 60 inches in your language, or 102 x 152 cms in our language :D because we have gone metric,
You, Myanmar and Liberia, stick with the old way, as the only thee countries in the world who are loathe to change to a much easier system
Sorry Jerome, could resist that little poke :giggle:

Do tell us what Jumbo means in USA

Keith,
I agree that metric is easier; however, its hard to fight the establishment. I use both with equal ease except for the exact conversion where a calculator comes in being handy.

The problem with painting mounts is that if you use an opaque paint - rather than a transparent wash
putting glass on top can produce weird optical effects. The mount can also stick to the glass. Spacing
the glass away leaves the mount flapping about and will go wavy without the glass for support. Especially
on a 'jumbo' size. Applying a thin tint using watercolour wouldn't produce these problems, but I would defy
anyone to a do a perfectly even watercolour wash on mountboard of this size.

You can buy tinted drawing paper in wide rolls. You might have better luck finding the right colour.

Then all you have to do is stick it down to the board. :? :o Anyone got a jumbo vac press?

Depending on how you are mounting the piece, another alternative is to use a wide wooden slip painted to the right colour. We're doing one at the moment using A231 obeche from Rose and Hollis which is 68mm wide.

.... There is also A245 which has a nice coved edge. These flat mouldings are great for oversize 'mounts'.
They are about 8mm thick so you get a good deep bevel. Being more rigid than card you can lift the glass
away from the surface. I run a narrow strip of linen tape around the outside (less than the rebate width).
It won't curl up like yesterday's sandwich.

Large card mounts are a PITA to me. Too floppy.

Jerome :D

In UK Jumbo refers to just 40 x 60 inches
So in USA is it size specific, or just anything bigger than 32 x 40 ins ?
BTW the name for 32 x 44 ins is Double Imperial, but I'm thinking, that's a name that maybe the younger framers are not so familiar with.
And to stay on this thread .....
Imperial is obviously 22 x 32 inches, but that has increasingly been replaced in Art & Graphic shops by A1 size 594 x 841 mm ( 23.5 x 33.1 inches) when this size is cut 8 out it becomes
our letter size A4 = 21.0 x 29.7 cms

28x23 is Elephant
40x27 is Double Elephant.

Maybe that's where Jumbo comes into it.

Thanks for all your reply's . I am actually laying a piece of fabric with a lace sections, so the colour is going to show through. then with a spacer to keep away from the glass. Hopefully the painted option will work as it does not have to be a perfect finish. Fingers crossed.

Thanks again

Why not use a stretchers covered with material of the right colour, you will find it easier to sew on the material you are framing

Unfortunately Steve it has a scalloped edge so an amount of the fabric will not be covering the mount board . Hey Ho such is life. :head:
