How to re-frame this?

Hi,

I picked this up at a jumble sale - there was something about it I liked, but think it could be framed better. Maybe a solid wooden backing and frame, nicely stained or similar?

I always think this sort of far-flung 'ethnic' stuff looks vaguely phoney in trad Grecco-Roman style
moulding. Too Western.

Go for something more exotic with an homespun look. Weathered wood or sommat like that....

I'd certainly look at something more appropriate. Perhaps change the backing for something more suitable, maybe a hessian or rustic timber, then use a deeper frame, probably setting the object back in a box, to create layers and depth. Glazing is optional, but would certainly save on the dusting!

I think the green baize looks excellent, but the moulding (which is in any event cheap and nasty) looks silly.

Stick with the green baize but no moulding.

Here's one I did early , do away with the mount in your case , may be use a reed mat ( this one is a table mat ) or bamboo blind

I used a Oak box, with a contemporary shape moulding for a spacer ( Simon's M0084) both stain brown mahogany with a dark wax

Thanks for the ideas. I've removed it from the frame so far :

For some reason, the 'backing board' was a sheet of 2mm glass. You can guess how long that lasted whilst the frame was stored, moved around etc.

Looks so much better now it's free from that green baize! I'd be tempted to hang it straight on a wall without a frame

It's already got an Africa-shaped frame on it.

Hmmm, there's an idea. Might hang it as-is above the carved wooden heads my father bought vmback from Bali donkeys' years ago.
