Supplier of Larger Mouldings

Post by A Few More Words »

We have a client who we have done some large frames for who is interested in some larger mouldings than we normally stock.
We are now looking for a source for some mouldings like shown in the photo as well as some large gold mouldings (not bright ....more dark / antique apopearance)
Ideally , we will put together a range of 20 or so higher end samples for this client.

Is there any UK based supplier who specialises more in higher end mouldings ?

You might investigate these folks...

http://www.frintongallery.co.uk/

I they do (or used to do) hand-finished mouldings in length and chop. Their biggest size is maybe
a 4" swept. They can do them in any of the huge array of finishes, so you can mix'n'match and stack
to build up larger widths. The selection of large factory-finished mouldings is quite small.

I must say that the only time I ordered chops from them I was surprised to find the bits appeared to
be finished aftercutting which made the ends a tad rounded.

They will of course make the whole frame for you, which is a must if you want corner ornaments but
shipping across the water is likely to be astronomically expensive.

Have you tried "International Art Supplies" in Watford. They used to do some fairly large mouldings. I'm afraid that I'm a bit out of touch with what they have to offer these days.

Another supplier could be ECO mouldings, who are, or at least were a supplier of very large polymer mouldings for mirrors and the like. From what I remember, they don't supply small quantities. Minimum order value is probably over £1,000.

You might consider checking out some of the bigger contract framing companies, some of them import some totally massive mouldings for fitting out large hotels, conference centres and hospitality venues.

Another possible idea is to see if you can get hold of a Richard Burbidge catalogue. They do some fairly substantial architectural bare wood mouldings. Their local stockist in my area is not interested in ordering mouldings for me at all. They only want to order the ones that they usually stock and Richard Burbidge won't supply me direct, because of their agreement with the local stockist. I hope that you have better luck with this than myself.
