large poster - mount only

Post by The Common Framer »

Hi

Have a customer who wants a poster 120 x 100 mounted on board. No frame. Would you use MDF or Foam board? Many thanks for your advice :D

Foamboard would be very vulnerable. It's only really good for temporary displays or if you are putting
it straight in a frame.

2.5MDF would be my choice. You could use thicker, but if it bends you stand a chance of flattening 2.5.
In any case I would coat the back with PVA to seal against moisture.

Another way is to use two layers of thick mountbard which makes it more stable, but MDF is smoother.

Thanks Propsero

Think I will use 2.5 mdf. I use a vacuum heatpress - will then try and get the customer to pay for a frame! :D

Heardboard isn't bad if you get the good stuff. It varies a lot.

I have some prints that I laminated onto 3mm hardboard that I did in the '80s and
they are still stuck fast and dead flat.

If you have a vacuum heatpress, then why not get B&Q to cut you some 12mm MDF to size, bond down on to that nad then use heat seal film on to, paint the edges black, hangers in back, you then have a nice Blockmounted poster
