Rubberised black material

Post by DEEPJOY »

Hi All

I want to cover the top of my hot press with a removable MDF sheet to work on, but at the same time protect the press. I have seen a 10mm thick by 50mm wide black rubberised foam strip but have no clue what the name of it is. It is not hard rubber but it is not soft either, Usually, it will have one side adhesive coated with removable paper. Any ideas? Or anything you have used to deal with the same idea of turning the press in to a workable top when not in use?

I made a sort-of cabinet for mine. It sits on a shelf under a top that can pivot up.
Chipboard and 2x2. :D

Could be Neoprene, try Googling
"rubber strip self adhesive" or " Neoprene rubber strip self adhesive"

Screwfix will sell you rubber matting. My glass stands propped up against the wall sitting on it and it stops my compressor from 'walking'.

I bought some storm-guard dry glaze strips from Screwfix yesterday (43490) they are 10mm wide x 5mm thick but comes as the four strips joined together, rubber as described in OP and self adhesive with release strips

Do you thik this stuck to the underside of the MDF board be sufficient to protect the Hot Press?

Not sure, just had a thought what about a couple of sheets of foam board, even doubled up to 10mm or you can get 8x4 sheets of polystyrene from building merchants for a couple of quid but think there about 25mm or celotex which is much denser. You need to avoid point loading the glass area so maybe a 18mm ply that will sit on the frame. Or best option would to be to build a frame over the HP strong but light enough to move easily

Uncle Steve used to talk of walking across the lids of Hotpresses!

Neoprene sheet is relatively inexpensive, and it is supposed to be resistant to heat, most chemicals we would use, and UV (in case you left it facing the window.

Polystyrene 8x4's would be a recipe for polystyrene beads marching around your work shop!

I'd be careful with the stormguard strips, as the adhesive may want to work its way onto the warm glass of the hot press - easy enough to remove, but a pain.
