Can anyone advise on sealing natural bole/clay. It is a broad field of bole, 5 inches wide running up to two rails, a slight cove and sight edge of 23.5 ct gold.
Not sure what to do. I like the unsealed look of the gold.
Richard (both), Dermot etc., I would be particularly grateful and trust your advice — a very time consuming job, I want to be careful with it and am quite inexperienced.

If it's just the bole you want to seal then I would use a few coats of clear(transparent) shellac. Because of the wide 5" area this is best done with a 50/50 dilution with meths and the use of a wide flat sable mix watercolour brush. You would be looking to avoid any overlap marks on the finish, so that's why diluted shellac is best. When dry you can then flatten and sheen the finish with 0000 wirewool or 00 grade for a little more matt.

I should add further that if you coat too much shellac on then the finish will show as a high gloss varnish. I don't think you're looking for that, so go gradually and apply the shellac in a one-stroke method as in a watercolour wash.
Maybe Richard has a better method - if he comes back in.
