Best quality strap clamps

Post by Jarvman »

Hi all, I'm having trouble with my poor quality strap clamps. The frames keep popping out under pressure. :head: Can anyone recommend what is the best to use?

Are 4 corner clamps more desirable?

many thanks,
Gareth

We use one of these.

https://www.lionpic.co.uk/p/7777/Inglet ... lamp-A--5m

It works well. It was in the workshop when I started, so can't say if the price difference between this and the one vintage frames posted is justified. Pretty sure I wouldn't have bought the pricey one if it was me doing the buying...
Thanks,

andrew

The problem with most of the commercially available strap clamps is that they only really work with mouldings
with a nice wide, square back. You could try taking the corners off. The bare webbing can get a better purchase then.

The ones I use are really good. But like all really good things they don't make them anymore.

Just as a matter of interest they look like this:

No corners on them. The frames I use them mainly on have a groove in the back which the webbing nicely sits in.
The ratchet mechanism is simple and you can get a spanner on them and cinch them up very tight.

I think these are very good:

And these are less good as the clamp holding the strap sometimes slips:

I have a few sets of the Stanley ones, not much I can say apart from they seem to do the job when needed :)

I spent a week being trained by Pete Bingham and he used these.

They work very well indeed. Pete recommended got my own set. I've wanted to get a set for years now, but never found who sold them until now.

I'll get some in the next week or so. Well worth the money.

NYAF they are also availble from rutlands

http://www.rutlands.co.uk/sp+woodworkin ... nds+dk7018

and 10 quid cheaper. It would be great to find somewhere that just sold the springs as having 10 sets or so would be great for when busy.

These spring clamps are only good if you're doing hand finishing as they do leave a hole.

That's true, but most of my output is hand finished. However, nice hard plain wood mouldings might not be too much of a problem. Also nail filler might solve the same problem for certain factory finished mouldings. Thanks for the tip about Rutlands, unfortunately they are out of stock just now.

I use Bessy band clamps, they can be bought for around £35 each.

Bessy here as well. I use scraps of L profile moulding to
extend the size of the corner supports when clamping deep
frames.

Worth the price of admission right there!

I recently got hold of a secondhand frame Co Steel band clamp from lions. It's been really great on oak moulding that's a bit warped/twisted.
I also have a set of Ulmia clamps, which work well but as was said before, leave holes that need filling.
