Large Map 2 Halves

Post by MarkR32 »

Morning All,

Well from time to time we come across these ones.

I have been asked to frame a large map that is split in two halves and try to create a seamless joint. the customer does not under any circumstances want it dry mounting much preferring a 'conventional' framing method. But is happy for me to 'trim' excess boarder material as required.

so with that in mind am I right in my thinking that I would need to t hinge the two halves on the barrier board, top and bottom and then carefully secure in the middle using acid free conservation tape before continuing to frame, glaze, etc.

Its a fair large piece, 38 inches wide 24' high

Thoughts are graciously received.

Thanks
Mark

Valuable as in cost £££ (or rather $$$) unsure

Valuable as in (replaceable) hummm I wouldn't say it would be easy to get hold of again.

Dry mounting and trimming excess borders are acceptable techniques for mass-produced items, but not for something that has any inherent value. Sticking two pieces together sounds like a job for a conservator, not somebody who has never done it before.

Have the two halves been folded,is so, you're never get a seamless joint, you should only t hinge the top, not top and bottom

I used to be a paper conservator and I know what's involved. You cannot decide how to approach this problem without seeing the two halves of the map.

You will need to show it to a conservator before taking this any further. Sorry, but that's how it is!

How about a mount with two apertures with just a small mount over the join?
