The question is, should I use glue on top of the internal spacers to bond the sandwich to the underside of the top mount, or leave the backing board tabs and tape to be enough.

What concerns me with this type of assembly is, if the glass ever gets broken we have a big job to replace.

In so far as I understand your problem; provided the spacers are mitred accurately I see no reason to glue them to the top mount. If you have to disassemble the frame later, it's better to have all the internal pieces clean and separate.

I agree with above. If mitred accurately, there will be no movement without glue.

The spacers in the rebate of the frame will stay put as others have said but is it the internal spacer you are concerned would move? Why not glue strips of foamboard around all four sides of the spacer to stop it from moving? 3 strips of 5mm on top of each other on each of the four sides should do it. Makes sense to me, I think

Thanks is done now and i have not glued.

The main concern was if the backing board bowed outwards the gap between the underside of the top mount and the top edge of the internal spacers may be seen. On saying that, what David McCormack said was an earlier concern that the inner spacers would stay where thy were.

Time will tell.

I would have done it the way David suggested, then done of the mounts and backing board would be able to bend
