Any thoughts on best way for mounting these down? A glossy paper surface with a lottery scratchcard type overlay covering the countries for people to scratch off where they have visited.
Tempted to dry mount in the heat press, but unsure if heat might affect the scratch foil. Resigned to an orange peel effect from any mounting due to the high gloss surface but it needs some support from behind as there will be no glass. Feels like sticky board might be the only viable solution?
Scratch Maps
Re: Scratch Maps
Double-stick carpet tape. Lay out strips on a board, leaving the release paper on top.
Make sure they butt up to each other and not overlap.
When the board is covered, lay the map on and line it up.
Lift one end and peel the first strip. Smooth down that end.
Next, lift the other end and peel the strip next to the first strip you have stuck. Smooth down.
Repeat until you have done the lot. Check alignment as you go.
Finally, go over the whole sheet with a roller.
Carpet tape is very aggressive and will keep it's stick almost indefinitely. If you do get a bubble, just bang it down again.

I've done quite a few by just using self adhesive boards, never had a problem

Self adhesive board either bought or home made (Prospero’s description earlier) and run through the Jetmounter (other brands available).

Is the way I do it, never any problems
You would need to be a brave man to use carpet tape

Re: Scratch Maps
I've only ever done one of these and I can't remember all of the details, but it would have been stick down onto self adhesive board and it was set within a mount and behind glass to prevent unintentional lost of the scratch of coating, with an easily removable back to allow access to scratch off move countries in the future when required.

We never frame with any type of glazing, defeats the whole object of them, the customer does not want to mess around taking the frame down from the wall, the take the back off etc, KISS = Keep It Simple Stupid

Re: Scratch Maps
Pops up frequently on the framers FB page and it can be put in a vacuum press OK. I've done several on foam board to give rigidity as they are large and they have come out all right.

Re: Scratch Maps
Thanks for all your thoughts.
I dry mounted using a vacuum press onto 5mm foam core and very pleased with the result. A good bond, no changes to the foiling and minimal orange peel effect.
