Float mounting gap

Post by cleaver »

Hi All,

The Mrs wants one of her wappy ( Peter) canvas boards float mounted...with an even (as possible) 7mm gap between the edges of the canvas board and the sight line of the moulding.

I can’t get my 3 brain cells around the calculations & how to do this on the Morso.

Basically, her canvas (10” x 8”-ish, BTW) will be stuck to a bit of 3mm thick plywood. The plywood will be bigger than her pic, and sit in the rebate, as per usual) She’ll paint the visible edges of the ply in a suitable acrylic.

She realises that her pic will sit beyond the rebate.

As I say, not sure how to go about this to get an even border of 7mm of ply showing that she wants.

All the best,

Paul
PS. 'Wappy' used in very debatable way, but I don't care :D

I'm not sure I understand what you dont understand? ¿
Do you mean you want to know the size of the frame to be cut?
If so, take the measurements of the canvas and add 7mm each side plus the rebate width each side.
Or, measure your rebate, say 5mm,so 5mm+the visible 7mm makes 12mm. So take your length of canvas board and add 24mm,same for width.
Is this what you were asking?

"I'm not sure I understand what you don't understand"

As long as the plywood is 7mm wider plus the rebate (5mm) along each edge then cut the moulding to fit the plywood, simples :D (unless I don't understand :? )

Peter.

So here is what you do,
Measure the canvas board, add 14mm + 2x the rebate width , write these measurements down

Cut the plywood to the above measurements , paint what will be the visible part of the plywood (to the edge of the plywood) and leave to dry

Cut the moulding to the above measurements

Join the frame

Fit the plywood (when dry) in the frame

Finish the back of frame, tape up, hangers, cord

Stick the canvas board to the plywood, leave to dry, I find it's better to do it now, as it's easier to line up, get it nice and square in the frame

Now get on with the next framing job   :giggle:
