hogarth frame

Post by lord nelson »

Hello All,

I have done picture framing before but now i collect mezzotints and have a collection of Hogarth frames which unfortunately are missing the gold coloured gilt dental moulding and the frames are chipped.
They do have age and are of good quality can the black paint that's chipped be repaired and the gold gilt replaced ? its like little pieces of gilt have fallen off and are missing.
If it helps i could post some pictures.

many thanks

Mark.

Hello Mark
I produce several varieties of the Hogarth frame and have indeed framed quite a few original "life time" engravings from Hogarth himself. I agree that many mezzotints look great in that style of frame. The gilded detail can indeed be replaced and the black repaired, depending on the finish used. Some were stains over pearwood, some black varnishes over gesso.
If you want these frames repaired, then the best way is to mail them to me or before that, post a photo of the typical damage and I can give you a quick quotation.
Please forgive the shameless advertising.
