Help to frame a flag

Hello, I have a large flag I would like to frame, it’s from around WW2, and the edges are worn/torn from flapping about in the wind, I’ve no idea where to start with mounting the flag on something that shows of the scars, and also allows me to frame it?
Any help or advice would be appreciated.

Old flags can be very fragile. They often have ceremonial and historic importance and many of us have only a limited idea of how flags need to be restored and framed. It is often necessary to have old flags restored to a satisfactory condition to prevent further deterioration within the frame. Forum member Tudor Rose is particularly knowledgeable about framing framing and restoring flags, hopeful she will see this thread and be able to offer some helpful advise.

Wow Tudor Rose, that’s pretty special, I have 2 smaller ones, I might start with one of those and see if I can achieve anything like what you did. I have a lot to learn tho as I’m not even sure how to do the shadow box stuff, I will spend a good few hours on the forum and see what I can learn tho.
What was the flag stitched to? Is that a special type of material?

For this particular one I sewed it to Level 1 Cotton Museum mountboard, we used the same board for the overmount with the caption.

Alternatively I've sewn them to cotton batting laced around Level 1 or Level 2 mountboard. On those I pad the board with wadding before lacing the fabric around it. That gives a lovely cushioned support to sew the flag to.
