Is 3mm thick acrylic OK for 3ft x 4ft box frame

Post by lawrieh »

I am using 6mm wide spacers that are about 12mm deep. I normally use 2mm glass but I need to do one in acrylic, would 3mm be thick enough ?

thanks in advance.

You might get away with it, but that's a pretty decent sized frame and I would personally use something a bit thicker if I was doing it my self. I very infrequently use acrylic glazing and I am not claiming to be an expert about acrylic glazing, but I generally buy acrylic glazig from a local source in my own town and the thickest I can buy locally is 4mm thick and I have used 4mm Acrylic on previous occasions for similar sizes of frames without any problem. However there will be those on this forum who are much more knowledgable about using acrylic than me and they willbe able to advise you much better than me.

Does anyone else have an opinion about 3mm acrylic glazing for a 900x1200mm box frame? I really need to place an order this morning if possible... thanks in advance.

I never stocked 3mm acrylic.... only 4mm and 6mm in 4ft x 8ft sheets.

My local hardware shop stocks both 2mm thck and 4mm thick acrylic in really big sheets and they cut to size. I get my 4mm acrylic from there. 4mm thick acrylic is the only thickness that I normally do. I don't get much demand for acrylic and this standard grade acrylic seems to be all that people want and it a good price, I generally go with that.

They were for the fronts of cases for the chap's home-made banjo collection. I let him do
the main woodwork. I just made the doors. (Out of some carp pine mouldings that he had - never again.  )

If it helps anyone else the supplier I am about to place an order with are Amari Plastics. They stock in thicknesses in 1.8mm to 15mm in sheet sizes of 5ft x10ft.... https://amariplastics.com/product/acryglas-xt/

They cut to size for free but you need to buy a whole sheet (around £50 for 3mm) and delivery is £12.50... all that is fine, I just need to decide on thickness...
