Keencut mount cutting problem

Post by ChrisG »

On a Keencut Artist Plus what might occasionaly cause the blade to fail to cut right the way through the mountboard. Three cuts just fine and one nearly through?

Could be many things ....

1. Blade not set deep enough .... JUUUUUST deep enough for the first 3 cuts but the fraction it has worn for the 4th is enough.

2. Blade set too deep .... this could make a too-deep track in the slip mat and if that track does not line up with a cut (because the slip mat has shifted fractionally) the blade will run out of it. Blade will wear faster if set too deep.

3. Worn slip mat .... the blade starts in one track in the slip mat, or starts a new one and then hits a load of other tracks and bumps.

4. Slip mat too short ... affecting the angle of the cutter bar, or slip mat too narrow, ditto.

5. Uneven pressure .... e.g. if cutting a long rectangle that you have to reach for the start of the longest cut, the angle of your arm and wrist will change along the cut unless you make a conscious effort for them not to.

6. The fall out moves ... once you've cut three sides the fall out could drop on the last turn of the board.

Try this - get two long skinny (6" or so wide and as long as poss) off-cuts, use one as a slip mat and cut a thin strip off the other, turn the slip mat over and cut another strip, then two more, making sure the blade is always making a fresh track in the slip mat. If you don't get 4 clean cut strips with a fresh blade then look at 1,2 and 5 above and if all's well there then Gawd knows!
