Hi, I'm new here and my first post is a cry for help.
I'm a photographer who does his own framing. I've got the Morso, Underpinner etc and am fairly experienced at straightforward framing.
A client wants some medals framing. They are mounted already in groups on thick card in two sets.
However, he wears them regularly and would like a frame with a removable front for easy access and replacement.
Any suggestions as to the best way to do this with regards to fastening them in the box in a way that allows easy, quick and frequent removal and replacement. Also a neat professional and secure way of having a removable front to the assembly.
Any help will be greatly appreciated, thank you
Photoboy

Re: Removable front frame?
Welcome to the forum Photoboy,
Instead of making the front removable, why not the back, have a look at some of Mikeysaling's (a forum member) work, in The Good, The Bad and The Ugly part of the forum, try this link http://theframersforum.com/viewtopic.php?f=11&t=4348 also have a look at his website he has a lot of info on there,
let us know how you get on.

Re: Removable front frame?
The cards the medals are mounted to - as long as they are just 'card' that you can replace (and probably with something better) and not anything special, can be attached to a backing mount with stick & stick velcro (hook side and loop side has self adhesive backing) - but back-up the part you stick to the backing mount with staples.
As for opening from the front there's a very simple and effective method that involves no hardware (hinges etc) called a 'slider' frame.
Make a box, it won't need to be very deep for medals, out of battens or frame moulding - it doesn't have to be pretty. Back it and add a backing mount in whatever colour and line the sides with strips of the same colour. This box is screwed to the wall, small mirror plates are fine.
Then make an outer frame with a deep rebate that will simply slide snugly over that box and conceal the mirror plates; give it a window mount to conceal the box.
If there is any fear that the frame might slip off the box, drill a hole through the outer in to the inner, countersink it and put a screw in.
Here's an example of a finished one - I'm sure I've got photos of the assembly of one somewhere, but it's pretty easy and straightforward.
A little more here http://www.thegrumble.com/showthread.ph ... tle-Slider and a shedload more if you buy Jim Miller's book!

Steve N, Roboframer, thanks to you both. I am now experimenting with ideas gleaned from your suggestions and will post when I have some results. I wasn't aware of 'Slider' frames before.

Think about a curio cabinet with a front door. Use small hinges as in small jewelry boxes on one side and rare earth magnets (small and super strong) on the other side. You can also add small ketches on the opening side if you do not trust the magnets.
