Help reqd re small Arqadia oak mldg, 113 200 000.
I gave up on oak mouldings years ago... too hard to cut and join properly.
However I have a customer who requires this and I must admit I am not looking forward to the job.
He is going to be wanting about 10 per week, at as cheap a price as possible.
What hints, tips and clues do you have for oak? I only have an old foot operated Proturner underpinner, so no bullet powered wedges. I don't think that gluing the mitres is going to make any difference at all, they soon crack open.
What size wedges? The mldg is only about 14mm high.
Thanks.

Well you're one up as it's flat. Got any hardwood wedges? One 10mm in the middle or slightly toward the inside should do it.
Glue as well.

Are you are using a Morso ? are the blades sharp ?
Try cutting the moulding upside down and as already advised use a hardwood wedge.

We use that moulding and lots of it, 10 mm pins sometimes split the wood, 7's are better, do use plenty of glue,
we always cut this upside down, sharp blades are a must, I will PM you.

If it is going to be a PITA to cut on a morso and they want it cheap, then I wouldn't bother as it isn't going to be profitable for you. If you had a saw and a pneumatic underpinner then that would be a different story.
Failing that Mainline do some nice oak veneers.

I pin oak and ash regularly on my venerable old Euro pinner. The key is to not place the wedges too near the outer edge and get plenty of clamping pressure on top. There is a lot more resistance with dense woods so if there is any movement at all as the wedge starts to penetrate the join will tend to separate at the front. Hard wood wedges aren't flared like soft wood ones so they don't pull the joint together. There is no 'give' in hard wood so using soft wood wedges can cause them to split.

If you don't have the right equipment to do this job, it's not worth the headache doing it just for the sake of doing it, you could try out-sourcing it to a framer who has the right equipment to do the job nice and easy, just get them to do the rims, leave the rest to you

Is the moulding wide enough for a Hoffmann?
