Where and how do you get your mouldings etc?

Post by aboughtwood »

Hi All,

I just wondered where people get their mouldings, glass (supplies) from? And do you get it delivered to your door? Also is it free delivery whatever you spend?

My suppliers go like this

Arqadia, usually next day, free if order > £100 net
Mainline as per arqadia (order before 11:30 for next day)
Frinton 48 hr usually, free over something like £75
Wessex, I'm on a van run, deliver twice a week, orders over about £75 free
Radius, van run deliver like clockwork tues and Thursday, I always spend over £100 so don't know delivery cost
Rose & hollis, always next day, £8 postage + vat

Online orders only, otherwise £150 and their deadline for next day is 4 pm which is pretty impressive.

I use FW Holroyd in Scotland for most of my stock. I am passing anyway so often pop in for whatever I need. I can then pick single lengths of moulding, single sheets of mountboard etc. They have a van so I get that if I need glass or larger deliveries.
I also have Arqadia and Frinton samples on my board so people can choose them.
I use online for both, Arqadia costs £10 for delivery if under £100. They immediately phone up to take payment and put it out next day.
Frinton costs £5 for delivery if under a certain amount £80? It comes in 2 or 3 days unless you request next day.
Customer service for both is excellent. They are the ones that have given me free samples and have decent delivery terms.
I have used Mainline and Lion in the past, usually when I have had to match a previous frame design and can't fault the service from either. I don't have Lion samples up though as they have a minimum order amount and I often look for 1 or 2 lengths to make up one frame.
Glass I used to get from CRL in Bathgate although now from FW Holroyd including specialist glass.
It is probably worth going and seeing any suppliers that are near you, or contacting them and ask for a rep to visit.

I'm envious.
" Next day delivery ". Does it really exist?
Takes at least 3 days for my Arqadia orders to arrive.
You guys on the UK Mainland get it far too easy. :D

Hi George,

Maybe you already know this but the guys (John & Graham -good guys too btw) at Abbey Glass in Antrim have a next day delivery service. They stock a lot of the Arqadia stuff actually. Oh, and I agree that the mainland guys get things very easy especially with specialist glass etc - If there only was a smiley with a sticking out tongue, crossed arms and hunched back!!

Hi featurepiece

I know John and Graham well. Great business and great and extremely helpful guys.
I just felt like a bit of a moan about delivery times (and costs) from mainland. :D

These have not sorted out their new website yet, but if you ask they will send a catalog......I use them a lot.

most company's require a minimum order for free postage of between £50-£100 and will bring it to your door

I use 'wessex framers' to buy reasonably priced glass which they deliver. Many companies don't deliver glass..

Hope this helps get you started

Rose&Hollis (02072725551 - they don't have a website) do a flat ash about 60mm. I can't say I've seen one bigger anywhere.

A simple profile like that is something that a timber yard would make for you. Jewsons once did me some stuff in pine and make a very good job of it. Or there are folks here on the Forum who would do it. In fact R&H would probably do you some wider but you might have to have min qty.

Or.....

Get the widest you can and add another around it. Cool stepped effect. 8)

My have samples from Arqadia, Frinton Mouldings, Renaisance Mouldings, Rose and Hollis, Simons and Wessex. How often and how much I order from which supplier depends upon what customers are ordering. More than 50% of the mouldings I use are bare wood mouldings, which I hand finish to the customers requirements, so I'm not a very typical framer. I also quite often will combine a nice looking, but moderately priced factory finished moulding with one of my own hand finished slips price the resulting combination accordingly. :)

I can't always find what works best without having samples from a diverse collection of suppliers to choose from. Unfortunately at the moment, I have less space in the shop to display moulding chevron than I once had, but this is about to change, so I will be able to have a lot more of my favourite mouldings on display, which I hope will be good for business levels too! My glass and most of my mountboard comes on the Wessex van.

I don't find that it works for me to limit myself to just one mountboard manufacturer and as a result I have sample chevrons for Arqadia, Colormount, Crescent, Daler, and Neilsen. Currently I order more Arqadia than any other make, which is a historical thing from when I could get Arqadia from either the Venton van, or the Wessex van, but now there is omly the Wessex van, my future mix will be more varied.

I also stock a couple of colours from the Simons super value conservation range, which is useful for custmers with limited budgets.
