Bespoke stretcher bars

Post by markw »

it can be fairly difficult to find a company that sells good quality bespoke size 18mm Stretcher bars so it was good to find that Tim Jones - late of Tabmaster has started A company that does just that. As well as deep bars etc. worth checking them out http://www.stretcherbarsonline.co.uk/

Thanks for that link. Sounds useful.

I've been using the double-slot stretcher moulding for odd sizes and it's OK up to a point. I find you can get very solid corners on bigger sizes if you cut your own triangles and make them bigger than the strip of stuff that you buy along with the moulding. And the ply that Wickes sell in 2x4 sheets is just the right thickness. 5.5mm. 6mm is too tight. Mind you, I had a right struggle with the last batch of moulding. Maybe either the ply or the moulding had swollen.

Here's a poser: If a piece of wood with a slot in it swells, does the slot get bigger or smaller?

No substitute for jointed corners.

Ordered a set of fairly large bars last week - just shy of 2m x 1.5m - from Tim.
Came next morning, with accompanying cross bars - great quality stuff. I can second the recommendation.

I used the wunderbars last week - was very impressed. Good tautness on the canvas after attaching it without the normal amount of pulling that I normally apply - result was a very good looking canvas wrap.
