Moulding

Post by Benhen »

I've asked Norfolk Mouldings to quote for this, but if it was available off the peg it would be better. Any knowledge for something very similar? It makes an excellent frame.

It might if it had a rebate - therefore nothing similar in any framing supplier's catalogue.

O Roboframer, I'll take it with or without a rebate --- show me the one in the catalogue, pleeease.
In grateful anticipation....

For clarity, must be barewood. Thanks.

you might be a long time waiting for Robo's reply... try reading his post. No rebate - no moulding. You say you are having a quote - is this without a rebate or have you just forgotten it in your diagram?

I've never seen that profile for sale anywhere. Definitely a custom milling job. I'm sure there are a few folks around who would happily mill it for you.

You might want to check out timber yards around your local area. Many will have facilities for making profiles, although the choice of woods may be limited. Oak or pine usually. The expensive part is if they have to have knives made to suit the profile. Straight ones are no problem. That section needs two curved ones. It may be that some places already have knives that they use that are close enough to your design. Otherwise you are into a few hundred quid for tooling.

You could also check out the many sites that offer 'builders' mouldings. Stair parts and architraves and wotnot.
You might find something close if not exact. Most will be without rebates, but it's not a hard job to cut a rebate if you have a router or a table saw.

Nice design btw.

Thanks, Prospero. You have a good eye for shape. Problem I'm having with the available bare woods are they are either too ornate, or too shallow in contour for my purposes.

Hi Mark, thanks for the thoughts. I shall be building up the frame, which will then give me the rebate. The whole item will come out at about 75 mil in depth which is, I'm thinking, beyond the capability of most timber available to mill.

It occurs to me that it's going to need a fair old chunk of timber to machine it from. 3x3" or near.

With a bit of imagination you can build up a big moulding from two or more. Depending or course on the final finish and whether or not you can disguise the joins.

I never actually did the frame. :( I was asked to copy an old frame that was falling to bits and I did the sample more as a challenge than anything. It was a bit of a lash-up but came out surprisingly well.
I keep the chevron in the shop and wheel it out now and then to lets folks know I'm a force to be reckoned with.
