Gilding Training
I start a Masters In Conservation Of Historic Objects in September and will be consentrating on Framing as my subject. My shop is in Long Eaton Nottingham. Alas all the guilding courses I can find are in London along with any courses the Fine Art Guild runs. Does anyone know of a person I can learn from around the Midlands area. All aspects of frame repair and guilding would be great. My shops number is 0115 9731822 or mobile 07968 312699 thank Barney

Hi Barney,
I don't know of any gilding course in the Midlands... Being a pretty specialised subject your're probably going to have to travel some way..
You've probably seen these course already, or maybe they are on the FATG list:
Jan Pike does courses in different locations round the year:

There's also Richard at Watergild Studios, he's in Portsmouth:

Paragon School of Furniture Restoration:

West Dean College:

There's a really good restorer and gilder in Stafford called Ruth Tappin, she does not do courses as far as I know, but you could always ask her to see if she would think about doing it!

Re: Gilding Training
While I was living in Surrey, I looked into taking some courses at West Dean College, unfortunately I never managed to go on any of the courses I was interested in at the time, but this college has courses covering an amazing number of different subjects, including many short courses of just a few days. I you fancy a few days away, this may be the thing for you.
The college is set in a rural and historic area surrounded by lovely old fashioned villages and country pubs and not that far from the sea, if you want to make a mini holiday and take your family with you, they find find plenty of really interesting places to visit while you are doing the course.
