keyhole hangers or something else?

Post by daveym »

I'm wanting to find a way of hanging small framed printed mdf blocks onto a wall. The depth of the mdf is 25mm and the overall size is 24cm x 18cm so they are fairly small and lightweight. These are not a frame but more of a decorative novelty feature with a metal coat hanger attached which is actually for a dog lead. I wanted to know of the best way of hanging these up as so far I can only think of keyhole hangers on the either side of back which I have attached in picture. I recently ordered these and waiting for them to arrive but I'm having second thoughts as to whether it would be the best approach.

In order to get the MDF feature flush on the wall I would need to find a way of drilling the area on either side of the back of mdf so as to fix these keyhole hangers into and I would need to get the right depth. I'm not the best with using drills in situations like this. I've watched a youtube video of someone doing similar, where they remove the excess from the back of wood using a carbide tipped bore on drill with stop collar attached so they don't go over the required depth but I can't find anything like this online. It looks easier said than done so just wonder if there is any other type of hangers on the market with less work or if I did have to go down the drilling route for these keyhole hangers, is there a specific drill bit or piece of equipment to get the cut looking professional.

thanks for any help in advance.

Get these from Lion
https://www.lionpic.co.uk/search?q=787a plus https://www.lionpic.co.uk/p/34047/Face-Drill-25mm
Or
https://www.lionpic.co.uk/p/37121/Sawto ... dia--pk-20 plus https://www.lionpic.co.uk/search?q=9287

If you are doing 100's then get a routing table (with router) and a key hole routing bit, so you rout the keyhole in the back

You could knock up a jig to use with a router. A stout board with fences to hold the piece and surrounding
fences to limit the router movement. It's nothing too complicated. All you need is a few bits of wood. :D

It might take a wee while to make it, but once done all you need is a hand-held router with a square cutting
bit set at the right depth, quite shallow in this case. Then you can do them very fast.

Thanks for your replies.

I'm thinking of going for something similar in terms of round hangers but just buying a 30mm round bore end bit for my drill. I've looked at some cheap routers on ebay and can get one for £30.00 which I'll do if my items sell but for the time being trying to do what I can on budget and using what I already have around the shed ie standard drill.

Do Lions sell 30mm standard metal round recessed hangers like thoese in the link below, as I've seen these on ebay and amazon but only in very small lots and it's basically working out at £1.00 each and since I require 2 hangers per wall feature it's eating in to profit. I need to try and bring these down to about 0.50-0.60p each if possible. Just wondering if I can buy in bulk lots of say 50-100 at a time.
