Tray frames at the RA
I visited the RA summer exhibition a while back and of course took note of the framing. I particularly likes some of the tray frames. Interesting lay many were very similar but rather than painted wood appeared to be gessoed with nice closed corners. I'd like to try this out as I sell a lot of plain wood and painted tray frames. Does anyone know of a lily source for they frames in a London and is it just a matter of gessoing my current obeche frames or would tulip be a better choice?

Either obeche or tulip will do for gesso. I presume you're going to spray the gesso and in that case it's much better to make gesso with RSG. You would be spraying it hot and it works best if you add a table-spoon of cheap brandy (Aldi ). This prevents pin-holes appearing in the surface.
Properly made gesso is much easier to sand then artificial gessos but you would need to seal the finished surface with a single coat of shellac - at least I think so, because I don't paint finish my frames but others that do will surely pip in to advise.
Good luck with it all.
