Filtering tainted air from compressor through underpinner

Post by boscawen46 »

Hello,
I have a minigraf 4 running off a Hydrovane 501 compressor. I have been making large quantities of frames lately but have noticed that my chest is hurting, I assume from the constant air release, when a wedge is driven in by the underpinner. I assume that while the compressor is reloading and working a tiny amount of compressor oil enters the chamber and this mixes in with the compressed air. At the end of the day or couple of days the water residue that comes out when release valve is opened has a very slight oil texture to it.
Obviously this cant be healthy while working on the underpinner and I would like to know if there is a filter that I can fit that would purify the air reaching the underpinner.
Thanks in advance for any advice
James

Is not a hydrovane compressor supposed to be an oil less compressor? If so I'm thinking that there should not be any air in the resovior at all. Oerhaps you need to clarify this with a phone call to Hydrovane and see what they have to say about it. I say that you chest feels tight. Are you coughing up anything at the moment? I'm not sure that I like the sound of this.

Never mind the underpinner, perhaps your doctor needs to check you out and see that your chest is O.K. Perhaps it's better to be safe, rather than sorry. I hope that you are sorted and feel better soon.

You can always place a second filter (via a connector and hose) to the exhaust port of the foot valve block.

You can buy compressed air filters or filter-regulators that sit in the air line as it exits the compressor but some machinery relies on the small volume of oil in the air for lubrication. You might also look to get the Hydrovane serviced possibly a seal is breaking down. Hydrovanes being rotary vane type compressors which I believe are harder to seal that the more tradition reciprocating compressors.

Alternatively you can replace the Hydrovane with an oil free compressor which are generally used for medical installations.

Thanks for all your advice and concern. The pain is not in my chest as a result of anything else but the constant standing over the underpinner while it is working. Been framing for last two weeks pretty solidly and its without doubt as a result of breathing in whatever air is expelled during the underpinning process. No problems before that. The Hydrovane does have its oil reservoir filled up every year or two and so I assume that makes it an oiled compressor?
Will look into filters thanks again
