Where is it best to hang a framed oil on canvas. String attached to the stretcher or to the frame?

I don't think there is a definitive answer, it will depend on a few things and may well be either or.
Normally I hang it from the frame, as I don't always make the canvases so I'm not always sure how well made they will be.
Sometimes if it's a small frame on a deep canvas held on by offsets, I hang it from the canvas because otherwise the wire is digging into the back edge of the stretcher.

Personally, I always hang from the stretcher, as I figure that it would be better for the frame to fall from the artwork rather than the other way around (not that I'm planning on either  )

Always the frame here, why put extra strain on the strainers? The frame is joined and glued solid, the stretcher bars are designed to be able to be adjusted so not fixed.

I usually hang from the frame as this just seems the more obvious thing to do.
