Looking for screws

Post by WelshFramer »

I normally fix chrome D-rings to frames with round head slotted chrome screws No 6 by 3/4 inch.

I've just realised I'm nearly out of them and phoned my normal supplier to order some more. They say I'll have to wait at least a month and the price has trebled since last year! Yuk!

So, does anyone know where I might get some more screws at a reasonable price?

Alternatively, what do other people use to fix D-rings to mouldings?

I buy all my screws online from ScrewfixDirect. They have been very quick and reliable, prices are good and they have never been out of stock (so far).

They should have something to meet your wants.

No round head slotted screws of that size in the Screwfix manual. The nearest thing they have is cross-headed self-tapping screws.

Mike,
My advice is to get yourself a battery operated drill and a pozidrive bit and use self tappers. There are many reasons, most of which are about saving time and frustration.

Self tappers also need no pilot hole except in really hard wood in a thin frame. I use half inch self tappers mainly and three eighth in small frames and five eighth in softer wood in larger frames.

I buy my self tappers from a specialist 'fasteners' shop and they cost about $20 per thousand. I wouldn't care if they were $120 per thousand because they are faster, stronger and easier.

Come on, Mike, come on out of the 18th century and abandon all those old ways!

Does look as if I'm going to have to join the modern world. :(

...or go over to using brass D-rings and slotted brass screws that do seem to be still available. :)

The only thing you will regret is that you didn't do it years ago!

I can't think of one good reason for screw manufacturers to continue making those awful things that screwdrivers slip out of so easily.

Oh yeah, I forgot to say before that self tappers have the thread all the way along the shank. That's why you don't need such long screws. Also the thread is designed so that it is much stronger than the old fashioned wood screws with round heads.

I have a box of boxes of those old screws with slotted heads, about 2 gallons in volume, most of them brass, that I have not been able to give away in the past 15 years. They are going to end up in the dumpster, so Mike, if you want to drop by, you are welcome to them!

Well, we having been thinking about having a holiday in Oz but it will be a few years before we save up the money so it's probably not worth saving them.

Sounds like a candidtae for eBay. I did find an eBay seller selling old-fashioned screws mostly in their yellowed-with-age original boxes. Unfortunately they didn't have the right size for me.
