A type of punch?

As I do not know the correct name of this nail punch I will attempt to describe it

What made this little punch unique was the "sliding sleeve" that slid up and down over the business end of the punch. The sliding sleeve would slip over the head of the veneer pin preventing the end of the punch from slipping off the pin, it that makes sense As the pin was tapped home the sliding sleeve, being loose, would slide up and not bruise the moulding.

When I first started frame making I used one of these all the time until we purchased our pneumatic underpinner with the air vice. Unfortunately, I sold this little gismo along with every thing when we sold the business

I would dearly love one of these punches when joining hard woods so if any one has one they no longer require I am happy to pay top $ or perhaps someone may know if they are still available. I have searched the interweb and drawn a blank.

The type of punch I'm looking for is for panel/veneer pins and not for v nails.

I know exactly what you mean Peter. I've got one that I bought years ago from Mitrecraft when they were having a sale.
It's a Morso brand. i doubt if they still make them. i fear such things are no longer made as people go for air-pinners
to do the same job.

It might be the same one that you got shot of. If so, you can't have it back.

The best fiver I ever spent and I use it daily for fixing liners into frames. A lot more controllable than and air pinner.

I'll check around and see if I can dig anything up.


btw. That one on Ebay is for v-nails.

prospero, I'm not surprised you know what I'm looking for and if you do manage to dig one up i would appreciate it. I think I bought mine from Roger Turner (Kingfisher mouldings) in the late seventies If I remember correctly it was chromed and quite heavy for it's size with a checked, non slip handle. I'm sure you are right and they are not made anymore. So if anyone has a second hand one that will be fine

There are lots of thing that seem to do the same job, but they aren't the same.

The Morso one I have has a weight. It's a similar thing to a garage slide hammer but instead of pulling out dents
it knocks in nails.

I can now be more specific as to what I am looking for.

I believe it's called a "Pin punch with guide sleeve". This info' came from a woodworking forum.

With luck I may be able to track one down. In the meantime if you have one or hear of one I am very interested.

That's very much the type of thing James, except you have to hit it with a hammer. I think the one Peter is asking about
has the hammer 'built in'.

James, that is the type I am looking for . You do hit it with a hammer and the sleeve prevents the punch from slipping off the veneer pin.

I have since found a number of suppliers on line and it's now a matter of obtaining one of a suitable size.

I am sorry if my poor/inaccurate description was misleading
