I've never found it necessary to have one, I just cut the mount slip 2mm to large for the mount a slice it down smaller in stages for a nice snug fit. As two sides will be requiring slips of the same size, you will only need to set the size once for two lengths or slips. It is not my understanding that the Fillet Master will actually save you any noticable workshop time. As you say, it's a rather expensive piece of equipment and I'm not convinced that it is worth the money.
