The new 16inches

Post by GeoSpectrum »

A customer bought a number of frames from me. Two were 16inches square float frames with a little spacer block between the canvas and the outer frame. Now I'm being told that her 410mm canvas won't fit. last time I checked 16inches was 406.4mm so I cut the frames to 411 to allow a little fitting room. If I had cut it to 410 plus the fitting room it would have been 414mm ie.7.6mm larger that 16 inches which would have been almost 4mm wiggle room, too much, so I didn't of course.

Is it me?

If it is a canvas with proper joints then 16" could be anything depending on how far the artist wacked the pegs out it may also not be square. I take it you didn't have the artwork to hand and the customer didn't actually measure it before you made it?

I personally wouldn't have made it without the canvas or at least confirming that that was the measurement. You could argue that you went off the measurements that you were given and that it is the customers fault for not actually measuring it.

I've stopped making frames to fit customer sizes. I've been 'caught' a few times. Now, I always ask for the item to be framed to be left in..... unless they agree to the no returns rule (unless it's me that makes the mistake).

I bought a tape measure from the pound shop once thinking it was a bargain - the thing was totally out, I think by the 50mm mark it was out by 1mm or thereabouts.

Great weather BTW :D

I've been caught out by this on occasion. I've even asked the customer to double-check before cutting the frames and still
been thwarted. Keyed canvases are a pain with floaty frames. No room for expansion if the canvas sags and they are almost
never dead square.

Let the dog see the rabbit, that's my motto. :P

The customer has now accepted that they orderd the wrong size and we have found a solution. They have also ordered another 10 frames, and have checked the dimensions. :P

If making anything custom we insist that they supply the size in metric , but still get caught out :head:

I had a web customer order 5 30x30cm mounts off us, then a week later order 5 12"x12" mounts, our system will send out a review email around 10 days later, had a review from him saying " the first 5 were fine, but the second 5 were too big and had to be trimmed to fit the frames"
I sent him a email explaining that he had ordered two different sizes and they are not interchangeable, when we did not hear back from him , we posted his review on our site along with our reply, we left it there for a week, then took it down, he never ordered from us again :wondering: :wondering: , can't understand why

I heard of someone who ordered two 8x10" ally chops and complained because he got an 8x8" and a 10x10".

It may be a framer's shaggy dog story, but it does go to show how easily people get confused.

I did a frame recently where the customer e-mailed the measurements. Oil on panel 810x650mm. This raised a little
red flag as 650 doesn't really tie up to an imperial measurement, whereas 810 is 32" as near as dammit. I queried and
was assured it was 810. At that point the painting hadn't arrived. I started to frame and got the plain carcass done when
the painting arrived. Yep, it was 800 not 810. It nearly fitted the frame, but I could not jiggle it so as to lose a gap on
the side. So I broke down the liner and recut to split the difference. It was snug but not tight up/down and sloppy left/right.
The liner still fitted the frame fortunately, with a bit of packing.

The majority of my online customers are women and at risk of sounding sexist some do seem to struggle with measurements and conversions between inches, cm and mm and are quite happy when I double chec or query sizes. I make sure I double check, and have various warnings on my website about checking sizes. mistakes still happen though, it is worth spending the time though as the feedback I sometimes get is that because I take the time and am patient they come back to me again for more frames.
