I would like to know the views of fellow members of this forum on how they stand with regards to posting photos of framing jobs they have carried out on to their website, social media, Instagram etc.
Do you ask the customers permission first?

I have been asking permission or only posting a photo of a corner so you can see the moulding, mount and just a segment of the image.

Athough it's whoever has the copyright who should be the one to ask (typically the artist), I also always ask the customer as a matter of courtesty. In one case, the customer was an amateur artist who was having art lessons with a teacher who also did framing. The customer didn't want the teacher to do the framing, but didn't want the teacher to see that he'd had it done elsewhere so asked me not to put the picture online.

I usually ask first before posting photos, or just post a part of the framed work

If you require more info' from FF members regarding copyright - enter "copyright" in the search box top right and over 250 matches comes up

Lots of bed time reading there :giggle:

I normally ask, but I normally say I would like to do it as it's very special, unusal, very proud of it, etc, the customer feel special that you want to showcase their framed artwork, they nearlly all say "Oh of course, where are you going to post to, have to tell my friends" only thing I do if ot's certificates I blur the names on them.

Unfortunately, most of it written by people with very little understanding of copyright law!

kartoffelngeist Beg to differ :? I believe these framers are (in the main) a smart bunch  and know their business.

Anyway, try page 22 October issue of "art + framing Today". The article is entitled unambiguously, "Get your facts straight on art and copyright"

ed209 pm me and I will send you a photo copy :D providing I'm not in-fringing any copy right :giggle:

Absolutely. I'll bet there are a few IP lawyers who are smart and know their business too, but I wouldn't take their advice on stacking mouldings or cutting v-grooves...

Ed209. Your welcome. :)

kartoffelngeist. I'm still not convinced :? as I know a few framers who's advice I wouldn't take on stacking mouldings or cutting v-grooves :giggle: but I would take their advice on many other subjects and please don't get me started on Lawyers :x

Anyway, changing the subject (apologize Ed209). I found myself in Aberdeen recently, as you do, :giggle: buying a pneumatic under pinner/compressor from a retired framer who also had a shed load of moulding to dispose of very cheaply and possibly buckshee  I did put your name in the frame (pun intended) because I knew of you through the FF. Most was bare wood and very useful. Did any thing come of it :?: if not pm me for more intel'.
