about the same size as our current design desk, just better as it has more usable workspace, the current one has a big moulding display system in the middle

ah cool, will squint in stead!

a couple of thoughts:-
- holes in table top for computer cables to come up through tidily,
- possibly some kind of second layer to the top to clear bits and bobs into if you need the whole top needs to be used in a hurry. see below for rubbish diagram!!
Image
- as it is reasonably high and very large it may be difficult to reach tools on the far side of the bench. This would mean you have to walk round the bench to get them. there are two issues with this. firstly it would be nearly 5m to walk from one side to the other, could cost you in time. 6-8 secs 10 times/day, 340days/yr is around 6-8 hrs a year! [as a caveat, if you notice that any job taking one second ten times per day is 1 hour per year. this simple sum can be helpful when streamlining workflow.] Secondly, it may mean that you cannot so easily have bins etc around the base of the table as they could be a tripping hazard. not wholly sure of the health and safety rules tho. a bin could be incorporated into the storage boxes on the computer side.
- would the large storage places be better divided up more? they are pretty big as they are 1.7m deep. the space may be more easily accessed from the sides as well.
-finally, the construction may be rather expensive if the panels are made to be structural, If they where structural that amount of 18mm mdf would cost a couple of hundred quid at least.

Just some thoughts, they may not be relevent to this particular project but i have enjoyed mulling it over! you've inspired me to design the clothes horse for our room ive been putting off for months!
