White moulding prep before underpinning?
Hi All
a quick question, when I join prepared black moulding with deep rebate for box frames I mark the outside edges black so that when joined there are no lighter coloured patches of raw wood showing from either small splinters or irregularities, all is good, this method works well for me.
However when joining white mouldings I don't know what to mark the "raw" 2 or 3mm of wood on the mitre with prior to underpinning as there is no white equivalent to black marker pen.
Is not so much how do I fill gaps in the front edge as there aren't any most of the time time but if there are, I use liming wax as recommended by another framer.
How do you deal with this? what if anything would you edge the raw wood with prior to underpinning, or how do you touch up the edges if need be after joining?
Thanks in advance
Lawrie

a;though have to wipe over inking as it's a gloss before drying.

Try white chalk pens as used on notice boards for restaurants etc. Works for me.
Also i use black dry markers for black frames as they don't leave that slight sheen on the moulding surface that ordinary marker do.

Thanks everyone, some good ideas.
I was worried about an exact match for the white, as there seems to be so many different whites (well at least as far as mountboards are concerned) but I guess such a small area with a close match would almost be invisible.
The Lionpic pen looks ideal... I will buy one today.
I already use the erasable whiteboard marker for black touch up, works brilliantly because if you go over onto the black wood it wipes easily with a finger/rag.
Cheers...

Re: White moulding prep before underpinning?
I have a pot of old matt white emulsion, which has dried up a lot, bit like clotted cream, once the frame is made I dab my finger in the paint, fill in any gaps on the outer edge and on the face of the frame and wipe off with a damp cloth, works a treat

I keep a variety of good quality artist's acrylic paints and use these to touch up any imperfections. Great for being able to get just the right shade/tone.

233art I had already commented on what I used for white, my printer comment was made directly after two comments about black frames, but yes some printers do have white ink.

Re: White moulding prep before underpinning?
I finally got some of the Lion (Edding) marker pens, they work well. If there happens to be a slight gap at the join (its happening less and less) I use a little liming wax.
