Hello,
I'm new to framing and have found it tricky to get a good finish when cutting mitres with a saw. I'm looking at hand mitre guillotines but cannot decide which one to buy. I've searched for reviews on the web without any joy. Is there any particular make you would recommend?
Thanks,
Woody

Re: Which mitre guillotine?
What type of saw blade are you using? It should be a sharp triple chip carbide blade with approx. 80 teeth. The cost of a proper picture frame cutting blade in the US is $80 - $175. Resharpening costs are in the $20-$30 range per matched pair (matched pairs are for double miter saws).
Sharp blades are essential.

You will be better off with a morso used by probably 99% of framers at some point in our careers. The problem with mitre saws designed for joinery is that they are just mot accurate enough in the cut and the fact that you have to swing the blade between left and right causes wear and further inaccuracies. Also as previously said you need fine blades.
I would by a second hand morso it will last you a lifetime.

As grays has said a morso is your best bet IMHO. If you can get a second hand one for a reasonable price you won't lose much money if you decide framing is not for you a year or two down the road. I paid £500 (not sure how much they cost now) for mine a few years ago and although some might say I don't make enough frames to justify the outlay, for me the quality of cut makes it well worth it and it is probably worth £500 or more now so to me it was a very good buy.
