Does anyone have a policy that pays a monthly amount should you be unable to work through accident or illness?

I looked into this at one time and came to the conclusion that if you put the money you would have paid in premiums into a savings account as a disaster fund you would be a whole lot better off.

Things may have changed, but at the time you couldn't just specify an amount that you would like be paid out. There were strict limits.
