The Scarlet Mistress

Post by prospero »

Got a project in the pipeline to frame a biggish portrait painted in a sort of 18th century style so
trying to make a frame to suit. My first idea was to use a big flash Frinton frame with lots of swirls
and ornaments, but this (as I anticipated) was a bit OTT pricewise.

So I knocked up this combo using stuff on hand.

I put on a basic gilded finish on the sample just to show the client. The real thing will need a bit more tweaking.
It's about 6" wide. The painting is 40x35". I may have overcooked the width having seen the end result.
I have a plan B which is about 3/4" narrower.

It's R&H A137 outer - extended with a bit of 3/4" pine. The fillet is something I had lying around and no idea where it came from.
Inside that is a 3/4" spacer and R&H A24. Then another shot-edge moulding and finally R&H A276 bevel liner.

Waiting to hear the customers reactions.....

nice, and a really good looking section
don't think it would be too wide though

I tend to make the moulding about 3/4 width of the frame as a general rule of thumb and it tends to work out
good luck with it all

I've got the actual painting now.

I think the sample I did will be about the right scale. :)

I've made a start on the frame so I'll post a few 'in progress' pic later.....

I started in the middle. This is the core moulding (R&H A24) and small shot edge and bevel liner.

Image

This is the outer part (R&H A137) with the ornate unknown fillet fitted. Just fixing in the filler piece.

That done, extend the depth with another piece of pine.

Then stick it all together.

Lots of sanding, filling and blending now..... :)

Do you not underpin the filler piece? (photo 2)

Oh, I've just looked up the outer moulding and realised what I'm looking at. That's very nice Peter!

Not in this case. It's easier to fit if each bit is separate.

Sorry Prospero. It`s a MAGNIFICENT frame. No offence, but in my oppinion, I think it looks a bit wide for the picture...

Don't agree at all, it's bang on for the picture.

Nothing like too wide, it could take wider still - if it were on paper and mounted, the mount would be at least as wide as that, and then frame.

Well I thought I had overcooked it a bit when I made the sample. But myself and the artist sat looking at it for
about half an hour and concluded it was OK. I did have a reccy of the location that it is to hang via some photos of
the lady's house and other frames in her collection. 8)

I find that a corner sample can sometimes look too wide whereas when it's all made as a full frame the effect can be quite different
would be good for us all to see when it's finished
