I think there is still a demand for these in some areas of the picture framing market. I've had three pics through the workshop this week that already had silk/fabric mounts or slips and they all looked very good. Still a demand for linen frame slips round here, also silk slips, mounts, and backings covered with fabric.

No doubt you do see some that look horrible and a bit dated! but most just look quality, many examples I see (along with the frames) are the type of work I would like to do.

I use lascaux adhesive for sticking down fabric, always better to glaze over if possible, a number I see are very dirty and brought to me to be replaced. Getting the corners neat on frames and slips can be fiddly...

Check out the Franks Fabrics website for some ideas and guides:

Robo, it is presented impeccably. I wonder how you would frame a 30 million pound Giaccometti.

With something that suited it better - in my eye that is of course and the fact is gold is warm and blue/grey is cold and they don't generally go and unless I'm missing something from the whole image I think that is the case here.

Richard. The frame in the second photo looks like it is afflicted with something nasty. Leprosy perhaps....

That doesn't mean I don't like it. In fact it's pure frame porn. :P :P :P

He is right, the gold dose not go with that at all, maybe looks better as the whole thing rather than the detail shown, I think many people get the kings new clothes syndrome.

It's like looking at someone waring a elegant dress then sticking a massive chav gold chain round her neck, just doesn't go.

I don't know what has been done to produce the fisnish in the second photo, but it would be very popular around here.

Looks great!

Prospero and NYAF, I think this knobbly and distressed frame was made around the 70's, it's certainly a bit unusual! I can see why the style did not catch on and become a classic, but still admire the framer who tries different ideas!

Just had a weird frame come in. It has what appears to be a liner covered with white corduroy. :?

Must say, that link from Richard to the American demonstrating his method is superb. Such a pity that the big UK university art schools didn't offer a module on framing. At the least it would have helped artists to appreciate the intricacies of the framer's craft.
