Recommendation of books, DVDs, you tube Etc.

Post by Ed209 »

My wife and I have in the last couple of months bought a retiring framers equipment and have set up a workshop in our house, we have had some basic training from the person we bought from and he has offed further guidance but is quite ill.

We we like to go on some courses and trade events and are currently looking at this but also is there any recommendations of the items in the title of this topic.

We are in Kent SE if any courses or trade shows could also be recommended

Many thanks in advance Paul

When looking for books you need to check that the framing covered is relevant for your needs. A lot of framing books are aimed at hobby framing, while there is nothing wrong in that the methods and techniques are often not practical for a professional framer, they take too long too be viable. If you are looking to sell framing you need books/ DVDs aimed at professional framing. Anything by Vivian Kistler is good and Pete Bingham has done a couple, also check out the FATG website, PFM is also worth a try but is based in America so postage could be an issue.
For framing courses there are several framers offering training, including myself, but check out Lyn Hall (Fringe Arts) and Wessex do a good weeks course.

If you click on TUITION on the left under Resources , you might see someone near to you.
IMHO best is to get someone to come to you, and train you on your equipment.
Not much help to a newbie to be taught how to use the trainers equipment, only to realise they have different machines at home
Also yours may need calibrating, or chopper blades sharpening, which a visiting trainer will spot at once.

F.A.T.G. have books aimed at the professional framer
Subscribe to the F.A.T.G. magazine" Art& Framing Today " - a good investment

Good luck in your venture, let us know how you progress :)

There is a lot of useful and informative vids on yootooob but you have to cherry-pick them.
Most are made by 'enthusiastic amateurs' and some of their methods are either half-arsed or
downright wrong when it comes to professional standards. Take them with a pinch of salt. :|

The real pros don't get time to make vids or are jealously guarding their secrets.

Lion do an excellent book by James Miller on object/3D framing including encapsulation, 'The Complete Guide to Shadowboxes and Framing Objects'. For some reason its not in the book section but it is in the catalogue.

Thank you to everyone who has replied so far I am booking the week long Wessex course for September (all booked before that)
I will also see if I can find someone that could visit my premises for the day in the meantime for guidance on my equipment. Will also look at some of the other books recommended particularly the one from Lion about objects/3D framing as that is something that appeals to me
