I have just bought a Valiani pneumatic mountcutter, old but working perfectly. I realise that I will need to have a sacrificial board underneath the board being cut but does this have to be repositioned often or can quite a few repeat cuts be made in the same place? Also does the "under" board have to be actual mountboard or can smooth grey backing board( which is obviously cheaper) be used?
Thanks

If you have theright depth of blade set, so the tip of the blade is just scratching the surface of the under mount (better known as the slip mat) it will not have to be mover every time you cut a mount, just keep an eye on it, when you need to move it, just trim 10mm off the edge, don't forget you can rotate the slip mat around and flip it over so you get at least 4 working surfaces to cut on. If you are doing a production run, say 20 of the same size, start off loading 2 mounts in the machine, cut the top mount, remove that one, load another BEHIND the one that is on the machine, each time the one under is acting as the slip mat for the one you are cutting, the score mark on it will be within the center fall out (waste) so you are not marking the next mount at all
As to what to use, we only use mountcard, but a lot of suppliers sell 'seconds' use these, we don't use greyboard as we find it blunts the blades so quick
