Hi there,
I have been asked to repair a framed set of ceramic models, where a few of the models have come loose. The area available to attach the ceramic model to the board is quite small.
Does anyone have any tips as to which glue to use? We have done some tests with a hot glue gun and no more nails, but neither have worked.
Any help gratefully received.
James

Have you tried some Milliput? It will certainly stick to the ceramic and can be made to flair out a bit to stick onto the board.

To start with, we don't know what the original adhesive used originally would have been, so it would be good if any of the original adhesive residue can be removed in case it is not compatible with the adhesive used to refit the models. Removing the adhesive from the surface of the mountboard may be more difficult and may require a bit of lateral thinking, as any damage to the mountboard that extends beyond the area cover by the model will show.
If it is possible, you might consider drilling one, or more small holes through the mountboard in the area that will be hidden by model when re-fixed and allow some adhesive to extend through the mountboard and onto the rear face of the mountboard to create a solid mechanical anchor, rather than just relying to how well the surface paper is bonded to the core of the mountboard.
There will be a number of different adhesives preferred by different framers and I'm not going to suggest my own preference is any better that anyone else's choice, but I favour Araldite and if the model has a glazed surface, a light rub on the part to be fixed with a fine abrasive paper may help to establish a secure bond. It always best to remove any greasy finger marks, or other contamination by means of wiping with a suitable solvent.

Thanks everyone for the advice. Managed to get them attached in the end using araldite. The milliput didn’t work but we did have fun modelling with it in the afternoon!
