Mouldings

Post by Geoff Smith »

Hi new to framing and wondered if you could offer some advice on moulding suppliers? I only really know larhson Juhl. Are there other suppliers maybe smaller that provide limited edition mouldings or more unusual profiles/ designs?

Any advice welcome.

Thank you.

Geoff -

I would suggest you try Wessex Pictures and Lion. Both are excellent on customer service and don't mind you buying minimal quantities. I get good service from Lion's rep and the help from my Wessex branch is really good. Both will help you with free sample lengths or chevrons and neither have a very high minimum order. Wessex are excellent on glass and do a cut to order service for glass and a mountcutting service using their CMC, which will save your cash flow in holding stocks of specialist glass and the expense of considering a CMC in the early days.

Good luck
Jonathan

I've worked for Ashworth & Thompson for thirty years. Like all suppliers, we have mouldings that are unique to us and those that are generic. I'd be happy to chat with you to see if we have any items that might suit your requirements. Please do give me a call if you feel Ashworth & Thompson can help.

Best wishes.

It's an interesting point Geoff and one which I struggled with at the beginning. I decided to only stock mouldings that I liked, because that reflected my taste and design style (which in itself is a difficult thing to know with limited experience). I have slowly expanded this to include some more obscure choices, as I learn more about the varying tastes of my customer base.
I got around not having hundreds of choices by offering a wide range of bare wood mouldings too, oaks and ash for waxing and staining and obeche and tulip for hand painting.
If you have worked out your USP and have a clear idea of where in the market you are pitching your business, then this should help you to offer a range that targets your market.
After a couple of years, I settled on having a good selection of black, white, cream, gold, silver and metallics. To this I added what I considered was a higher end choice of both traditional and contemporary mouldings.
Delivery costs can add up fast if you use too many suppliers. I buy a lot of sundries and materials from Lions and Wessex, so it made business sense to focus on their mouldings too. I also use Larson Juhl as I like the quality and style of what they offer.
Five years in, I still buy a fair amount as chop, for the convenience of not having to hold too much stock and wastage.
At the end of the day it's about doing great work, building up a customer base and making a profit. Making a profit has been the biggest challenge!
Good luck and apologies for the unsolicited ramble!!

When I started I went in to Holroyd in Glasgow (now Centrado) as it was local to me.
I was able to speak to everyone involved and they offered free samples or small lengths for me to make my own.
I used to collect everything I needed once a week (as it wasn't much) and now I get a weekly delivery from them.
Over the years I've had some Arqadia (LJ) and Frinton samples on the wall but now I only use Centrado unless I'm matching something else.
I only stock stretcher mouldings and an unfinished ash moulding that I can stain any colour.
Everything else I buy as and when required.
If I thought I would need one moulding, but ordered 2 just in case, then that one unused length could be £15 sitting which could be half my profit for the original frame.
I would suggest when we are able to travel go and visit the wholesaler that is closest to you, or a few of them.
Speak to the people there and ask to see the setup and then ask what the main mouldings are.
You probably want a few blacks, whites, woods, silvers, golds and then take it from there.
