It cracks me up!
I am currently gessoing a deep beveled slip which fits into the aperture of the mount. The problem of cracks appearing in the corner is worrying; is there any way of reinforcing the gesso to protect against cracking, i.e. by applying Shellac to the gesso or will this affect it?!

gesso corner
The normal method of reinforcing a gessoed corner is to embed a small piece of silk fabric under the gesso. This will act as a skeleton and reduce cracking.
