Online Framing Tutorials

Hi

Are there any online, You Tube, etc. forums/channels that give good advice and tips on framing? I've browsed the web and You Tube but it's mainly one-off clips doing a specific task. I'm looking for something that covers multiple aspects of the framing process.

There are some superb mount cutting videos, featuring David Wilkie that you can find at keencut.com. These are some of the best you will find. There is also a set of videos from Rinaldin by Mal Reynolds called 'Conservation Framing 'that you can find on youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ISPGkTrn0xo these are not as slick to watch, but the information is sound.
It is also worth looking at some of the webinars and resources on the larson-juhl website.


Otherwise, (and there will undoubtedly be other exceptions) much of the stuff you will find on youtube is of very poor quality, many are so totally wrong, that it is embarrassing to watch them. The problem being that no picture framing knowledge at all is required to post a video on youtube!

I hope the above is helpful to you, but what I really want to say, is get some proper training!

There is a wealth of clips on YouTube and some of it is very good. Mainly clips from equipment manufacturers/suppliers.

You have to cherry-pick them though. As mentioned, a lot is from people who don't really know what they are talking about.
I'm thinking of folks who think spray-glue is a good way of mounting stuff.

I once watched some of Rinaldin's videos on Youtube. He does 12 videos about conservation framing but it's so long ago that I can't remember if they all show best practice or not. I wish he wouldn't sometimes swizzle the frame round on a hard surface without picking it up to turn it.

I think you just might be looking in the wrong place.
There are several easy-to-follow books on picture framing. I can't name one but scrolling on Amazon should offer a few.
It's best to read and absorb from these than risk being influenced from something you see on-line.
Especially avoid anything described as a 'clever framing hack'.

Lot of very experienced framers on here

And another good bit of advice I was given by the eminent GCF 001 was

If possible get the training at your place on your own equipment

The rezoning being if you go to the trainers for teaching and they have Keencut,& Alfa and Morso.
And you have bought a Logan, Cassese and Morso you will benefit learning on your own machines
Also chances are if you have bough second hand, the trainer will be able to show you have to clean, adjust etc your kit
Even helping you to understand your Morso
It will cost you more, but long term look upon it as an investment

I'd second that!

She would be happy to take enquiries I'm sure, but I think training won't be restarting with her until around March.

As Keith has said, good training is a great investment.

I suggest you search for books and articles on the various framing topics - that's how many of us first learned about framing principles in our early days. Maybe FATG, Lion, and the PPFA Bookstore could be useful resources.
