"vintage" Morso 2 x problems

Post by Gillthepainter »

Not terribly big problems. But I wonder if you can help please with my 1960's Morso, that has legs not the full skirt style.
To be honest, it's been great for 10 years of service, and I want to make it just that bit better.

1. How do you clean the surface to stop marks getting on the mouldings. Mine is used a couple of times a month, and sometimes has surface oxidization in the very dry but cold garage. I wipe it with dry kitchen paper, and it's good to go. But it could do with a genuine clean, as, for example, I cannot really read the inches scale on the right. It is heavily tarnished, but not rusty. Just dark.

2. The left hand rebate support slides in and out effortlessly. But the right hand one jams terribly. I have to tap it with a little hammer to go back and forth.
I've removed it and cleaned it with GT spray that I would use on a bike, there is no wood or debris. But it really isn't smooth any more. Any ideas what product to clean it with properly?

Have had my blades hollow ground, and am looking forward to making my frames without having to overcome minor difficulties.

Some fine wet and dry black sand paper to return to clean metal and free up your rebate support. A rag to wipe of dirt, clean up with something alcohol/spirit named. Finish with some gt spray.

The rebate supports also need to slide along the moulding rebate, so that contact point also needs addressing. Resin etc can gather on those faces and some mouldings can be “sticky” anyway.

Teflon tape is a good fix apparently, but clean with extra fine wire wool first anyway, a whetstone even.

I give mine an occasional wipe over with WD-40 and fine steel wool. :)

to return to clean metal
This was the phrase I was looking for, thank you.

And as usual, thank you for the pro tips.

I'm ruthlessly going through the garage, and adiosing my excess bloat. I'm leaving myself 6 x big plastic boxes of stuff for painting and framing, plus my 3 styles of moulding.
I've made 3 trips to the tip so far, and have another 3 or 4 to go.

I want to just walk up to the Morso, and chop a frame. No difficulty, no shuffling boxes to get access to it. I'm nearly there ....

Zoiks. They're gonna need quite a few trips to the tip for so much stuff.
